Post Processing Equipment – Winterization

Winterization is a secondary process that utilizes ethanol and cold temperatures to separate fats, waxes and lipids from extracted oils.  It is commonly used to manufacture oils used in vape pens, infused products that are sensitive to fats/waxes (i.e. drinks) as well as feeder oil for fractional distillation operations.  Watch this video to see the winterization process in action!

The So-Low CH40-5 is used in the winterization process to speed up the coagulation of fats and waxes in the oil/ethanol mixture.   Temperatures of -40F are commonly used as standard “home” freezers will not get cold enough to support the process without very long wait times.

Rotary Evaporator

A rotary evaporator is used to remove the ethanol from the oil after the fats/waxes/lipid are separated in the vacuum filtration process.  Rotary evaporator requires 3 components – evaporator, vacuum pump and chiller.  This unit will recover approximately 1L of ethanol per hour.
